Inspiration Points: Masterpieces of California Landscape

May 31–August 11, 2013 and January 17, 2014–January 4, 2015

PROJECT SUMMARY

INSPIRATION POINTS was the first special exhibition to be featured in the Oakland Museum of California's newly transformed GALLERY OF CALIFORNIA NATURAL SCIENCES. This 1,300-square-foot gallery explored the human presence on the landscape through approximately 60 of OMCA’s best landscape paintings, photographs, and works on paper.

I served as the lead graphic designer on the project, providing concept, branding and exhibit graphics.

DESIGN NOTES

The curatorial parameters for the exhibit mark were that it be bold, elegant, and meaningful. Here the institutional typeface, Benton Sans, is set in its heaviest weight. A slice through the baseline suggests the horizon of a landscape, with only the p dipping below to connect to the subtitle.

Light blue tones were selected for the walls to give the appearance of the works floating in an open sky.

Graphic intrusion and color combinations were minimal as to not detract from the works.

Cut vinyl intersected with lengthy flat print panels, flush from each gallery bay's wall edge to again suggest the length of a horizon line.

CAMPAIGN & COLLATERAL

The Primary campaign image featured a close crop of a single work from the collection, predominantly in online advertising.
